Green light for trucks

A trial programme is currently underway in Australia to see if they can help to alleviate some of the traffic congestion on the streets of Sydney by giving trucks more time to go through the green lights.

More than 100 trucks are taking part in the trial, and they will use wireless technology to communicate with the traffic signals on about 100 intersections on busy freight routes.

The New South Wales Roads Minister Melinda Pavey was quoted as saying: “Heavy vehicles take a long time to stop and start, which can cause delays for all road users.

“This trial will detect a heavy vehicle approaching traffic lights and provide more green time, which will hopefully show us how we can ease delays for all motorists.”

The trial will run for three months. If it proves successful, the government will consider expanding the technology to emergency vehicles and buses
